Trojans Take Meramec. . . Again
The Troy Buchanan Trojans again were crowned the Meramec Tournament Champions on Saturday night with a 57-54 win over previously-undefeated area #1 Webster Groves. After a dismal opening half, Richard Rose sparked the Trojans midway through the third quarter with a steal at half court and a two-handed dunk. Rose struck again at the same spot on the next possession and finished with a layup. When the dust settled, Troy had fought back from a 15 point+ deficit to take a four point lead with less than thirty seconds to play. A late Statesmen three pointer brought the lead down to 1, when a foul on the in-bounds play sent Kent Rau to the free throw line. Rau calmly sunk both shots to widen the lead to three at 57-54 with 4 seconds remaining and ensure the title would reside in the Troy Buchanan hallway for at least another year.
Rose finished with 23 points, 21 of which were scored in the second half. Mark Roettger finished with 11 points and was a key player for the Trojans when he was on the floor. Rose and Kent Rau were named to the All-Tournament Team. Rose became the third Trojan to earn a spot on the Meramec All-Tournament Team twice, joining Shea Weimann and Corey Weimann.

Rose Cracks 1,000 As Trojans Win 74-44
With approximately 7 seconds to go in the third quarter Monday night, Richard Rose got a monkey off his back for the Varisty Boys Basketball team. He drove in towards the hoop and pulled up for the short jumper. Those two points were his 11th and 12th points of the quarter and numbers 1,000 and 1,001 for his career. A timeout was called and Rose was given the game ball as a souvenir for entering the selecive club that includes 21 others on the Boys side and only 27 others overall in Troy basketball history. By the end of the third quarter, the game was well in hand for the host team and they went on to beat St. Dominic 74-44.
The Trojans opened the game clicking from behind the arc, hitting 5 of 10 three-pointers on their way to an 18-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Kent Rau got on the board early and often in the first, draining 2 of 5 from three-point land for 6 of his 16 first half points.
The Trojans outscored the Crusaders 23-11 in the second quarter to take a 41-21 lead at halftime. Rau continued his hot shooting and converted a fast break layup or two. He even recorded a block on Crusader 3-point attempt with 3:15 to go. Overall, the Trojans were 8 of 17 from 3 in the first half.
St. Dominic came out swinging in the second half but the Crusaders were outscored 19-15 in the third, including Rose's 12 for the Trojans.
In the fourth, with Rose and Rau on the bench, Troy outscored St. Dominic down the stretch 14-8 to preserve the win. Rose ended the game with 22 while Kent Rau had 21. Rose was 3 for 7 from three and Rau was 5 for 11. The Troy Tournament record for three-pointers in a game is 7, set in '93 and equaled in '96 and '98.
Next up for the Trojans is Hazelwood East, who handled Francis Howell Central 71-56 on Monday. Rock Bridge beat Riverview Gardens 67-31 in the first contest of the evening. The Bruins' win gave their coach, Jim Scanlon, his 500th career victory.
